Teaching and Learning

Every day we do phonics and maths on the carpet. In the afternoons we do topic related learning and activities.

A typical day in the Foundation Stage Unit involves lots of time to explore our different areas of learning both indoors and out. Our provision is set up so that we will aim to use the outdoors as much as possible. In Foundation Stage we enjoy learning through play and we have lots of areas set up to explore that help us learn and develop.

The areas we have inside are: sand, water, investigation, gardening, writing, phonics, maths, reading, construction, creative, role play and making it.

We are fortunate enough to have a lovely outdoor area and this continues to be developed. The areas we have outside are: water, investigation, maths, reading, writing, creative and construction. We also have a mud kitchen and dining area and a natural construction area.

Every Thursday we take part in a Yoga Bugs session with an external provider. Abbie teaches us lots of new yoga movements linked to stories and we have a great time!

Every Friday afternoon we have P.E, during the winter months this is in the School hall. As the weather improves in Spring we go outdoors, as much as possible, to do sports and PE games and these sessions are taken by our School P.E Coach, Miss Wilson.

Alongside our phonics teaching children have a set of key words and a reading book to take home with them (Book bags are available from the office for a small price).

We encourage you to read daily with your child to help build up their reading skills. When you have read with your child you can write about it in their reading record and then on their book change day we will send a new book home. If you have not written that you have read with your child then we will not change the book.

Every working group also has a reading day where they will read in school with an adult. They will read their book and practise their key words. Once practised with an adult we will then change their book.

We will send home a letter saying when your child’s reading and book change day is.

Each week we have 6 ‘Wonderful Words’ which we focus on through various activities. By extending children’s vocabulary they are also developing their comprehension and language skills which will be important for reading comprehension.

For every child we use the Tapestry Online Learning Journey to record their learning and achievements. You can even add your own observations and comment on the ones we add.

For more information see a member of staff.

Each week we also choose focus children for the week and we collect detailed observations of what we see the children doing independently through play and exploration. We call these our ‘Wow Workers’. There will be opportunities for parents to see these observations and to discuss what the next steps in learning will be.

We try to make our topics as enjoyable as possible and invite visitors into school for hands on learning experiences. We enjoy going out on visits to local places such as All Saints Church and we aim to go on two trips a year to places that support our teaching of our topics. In the past we have been to Sherwood Pines, Whitepost Farm and East Midlands Airport.

PE Kit

To begin with children will only remove their shoes and socks for PE. We will let you know when children will need to come to school in their PE Kit, from this time they will be required to wear full PE kit on Fridays. PE kit is blue or black shorts, blue or black joggers, a white tshirt, blue or black hoody/jumper and trainers.

Each day we have a morning snack which is a free piece of fruit. All children under 5 years old also receive free milk. Once a child turns 5 Years old parents can pay for this. In the afternoon session we also have another snack. This snack is charged at 20p per day (£1 a week) and we have snacks such as cheesy crackers, yoghurts or toast.

Water Bottles

We ask that parents send a full water bottle to school with your child every day. As a Healthy School we encourage the children to drink water to stay hydrated and to be healthy.

We enjoy learning both indoors and outdoors every day and try our best to get outside in all weathers!
